The short answer
For ordinary driving, no. After sustained hard driving, some manufacturers ask for a short idle before shutdown. Kia’s 2024 Forte manual specifies about 1 minute after high-speed or heavy-load driving. Mazda specifies at least 30 seconds for its diesel. Read the manual for the exact engine, and drive the last few minutes of a hard run gently.
Why a hot turbocharger is sensitive at shutdown
Exhaust gas spins the turbine wheel, and a shaft links it to the compressor. The shaft turns at very high speed on a film of engine oil. The engine’s oil pump supplies that film. When the engine stops, the oil supply stops.
The turbine housing and the exhaust manifold store a large amount of heat after hard driving. Garrett explains that this heat soaks back into the center section of the turbocharger after shutdown. It calls heat soak-back a major turbo killer. The bearings and the oil seals behind the turbine wheel are the parts at risk.
A short idle before shutdown reduces the problem from two directions. The turbine housing cools while exhaust gas flows at low temperature. Oil keeps moving through the bearing housing and carries heat away with it.

What the manuals actually say
Kia’s 2024 Forte manual has a page for the turbocharged engine. It says not to race the engine immediately after a start. If the engine is cold, it says to idle for several seconds so that oil reaches the turbocharger. After high-speed or extended driving with a heavy engine load, it says to idle the engine about 1 minute before turning it off. Its caution warns that an immediate shutdown after a heavy load can cause severe damage to the engine or the turbocharger.
Mazda’s 2016 CX-3 manual gives a similar instruction for its SKYACTIV-D 1.5 diesel. After freeway speeds or a long hill, idle at least 30 seconds before stopping the engine. It adds that the idle is unnecessary when the i-stop system operates. It also warns against racing or over-revving the engine just after a start.
Neither manual asks for a cool-down after ordinary driving. Both describe the same two moments: a cold start, and a shutdown right after hard work. Those are the moments to think about.

Water cooling and stop-start changed the old rule
Many modern turbochargers have a water-cooled center housing. Garrett explains how it works after shutdown. Coolant in the housing absorbs heat, rises through the cooling system, and pulls cooler water in behind it. This thermosiphon flow carries heat away from the bearings and seals without the engine’s water pump. That is one reason current manuals ask for a short idle rather than many minutes.
Stop-start systems stop the engine at traffic lights by design. Mazda’s manual says the turbo idle is unnecessary when i-stop operates. Ford’s auto-start-stop manual page describes the conditions under which its system stops and restarts the engine. The manufacturer designed those stops into the engine’s cooling and lubrication plan. A stop at a light after a slow approach is not the same as a shutdown straight off the highway.

Common misunderstandings
A turbo timer is not required for a stock car. The manuals above ask for 30 seconds to 1 minute after hard driving. A driver can provide that by idling in the parking space, or by driving the last few minutes gently.
An idle of five minutes after every trip is not what the manuals say. It wastes fuel and adds engine hours. The instruction is tied to heavy load, not to every drive.
The cold start matters as much as the shutdown. Both manuals warn against racing a cold engine. Oil that has not yet reached the turbocharger cannot protect it.

Questions people ask
What counts as hard driving? The manuals name high speed, extended driving under heavy load, freeway speeds, and long hills. Towing fits the same description.
Does stop-start hurt the turbo? The manufacturer designed the system around the engine. Mazda states that the idle is unnecessary when i-stop operates. Keep the system in the mode the manual describes.
What about a cold start? Kia’s manual says to idle for several seconds before load so that oil reaches the turbocharger. Then drive gently until the engine is warm.
Is a diesel turbo different? The principle is the same. Mazda’s 30-second instruction is for a diesel, and Kia’s 1-minute instruction is for a gasoline engine.

Four years of just turning it off
I have never done a cool-down on purpose. I pull in, I turn the car off, and that has been the routine for four years and 70,000 miles. The turbo has been fine.
The manual. I never found anything about this kind of stuff in Fifi’s manual. Kia’s current online manual for the 2024 Forte does carry the one-minute note after hard driving, so check the page for your own model year rather than taking my word or a forum’s.
Mods. My suspicion has always been that if I put mods in to squeeze more power out of the engine, I would have to start doing some of this. More boost means more heat. I did not bother with mods, so I did not bother with the ritual.
