The short answer
A cylinder guides a moving piston. V6 means six cylinders arranged in two banks that form a V when viewed from the end.
One cylinder does one share of the work
Inside an engine cylinder, gas pressure pushes the piston. The connecting rod passes that force to the crankshaft. The crankshaft changes the pistons’ back-and-forth motion into rotation.
An engine can have several cylinders linked to the same crankshaft. Their combustion events occur at planned points as the engine turns. Cylinder count describes how many cylinders the engine has. It does not state the total engine size or power.

Count and layout are different facts
An inline engine places its cylinders in one row. A V engine places them in two angled rows, also called banks. A V6 has six cylinders in total, usually three per bank. V8 means eight cylinders in a V layout.
A horizontally opposed, or flat, engine places opposing cylinders on either side of the crankshaft. These names describe geometry. They do not provide a ranking of reliability, refinement, or running cost.

Common misunderstandings
V6 does not mean six valves. Valves control gas flow into and out of each cylinder. Engines can use different numbers of valves per cylinder.
More cylinders do not guarantee a better car. The engine is one part of the vehicle, and its design, condition, maintenance, and suitability matter too.
