The short answer

An engine air filter catches dirt before intake air reaches the engine. A cabin air filter catches particles in air supplied to the passenger compartment. Replacing one does not replace the other. Their locations, specifications, and service requirements depend on the vehicle.

The engine needs air with less dirt in it

A combustion engine draws in air to burn fuel. That air can carry dust and other particles. The engine air filter places filtering material in the intake path so much of this contamination stays out of the engine. It is a protective part, not an extra source of power.

The correct filter must fit its housing and seal as intended. A filter’s advertised performance is not enough to establish that it suits a particular engine. Look up the manufacturer’s specification and installation instructions. A workshop can inspect the housing and intake path if there is evidence of damage or an incorrect part.

Outside air passes through an engine air filter toward combustion. A separate cabin air path leads through a cabin filter to the interior vents.

The cabin filter serves the occupants

The ventilation system moves air through the interior vents. A cabin filter can trap dust and pollen from that air. Some filters include activated carbon to reduce certain odors. That does not make every filter an effective barrier to every gas, smell, or microscopic contaminant.

A loaded filter can restrict ventilation airflow. Weak airflow can also have other causes, including a blower or control fault. A filter replacement therefore cannot promise to fix every heating or cooling complaint. The filter’s location and access procedure differ between vehicles, and some older cars do not have a replaceable cabin filter.

What this means when buying

Ask which filter a service invoice refers to. ‘Air filter replaced’ may mean the engine filter, while the cabin filter remained untouched. Check the maintenance schedule for each fitted filter and for any special instructions related to dusty conditions.

During an ordinary parked demonstration, try several ventilation fan speeds and outlets. Record weak airflow or an unpleasant smell as a question for inspection. Ask whether an estimate covers a filter, diagnosis, cleaning, or a component repair. These are different pieces of work, so an unexplained single price is hard to evaluate.

Common misunderstandings

A battery-electric car has no combustion-engine intake filter to service, but it can still have a cabin filter. Electric propulsion does not remove the need to maintain ventilation equipment.

A freshly changed filter does not prove the whole car received regular maintenance. Treat it as one documented task. Do not assume that replacing a dirty engine filter produces a fixed fuel-economy improvement in every modern vehicle; engine controls, filter condition, and driving conditions all affect the result.
